Basenjis - History
The ancestors of Basenjis were bred a few centuries ago. There is evidence that these dogs were the favorites of Pharaohs. The remains of mummified dogs resembling the modern Basenji were found in ancient tombs. The dogs were carefully put in the tombs and wore collars decorated with jewels. This confirms that Basenjis were valued highly. It may be that Basenjis were used not only as companions. Pharaohs might have used them as amulets that protected their owners from devilry. Nowadays, aborigines in Central Africa consider Basenjis good insurance against witchcraft. The dogs are also believed to absorb negative energy and help their owners restore strength of mind.
The first Basenjis appeared in Ancient Egypt as gifts to Pharaohs. Though they were very popular at first, Egyptians gradually lost interest in them. However, Basenjis were still widely spread in their motherland - Central Africa. They were valued for their intelligence, devotion, hunting qualities, and magical forces.
Basenjis were first brought to England in 1895. However, the trip was too exhausting for the dogs to endure. They did not survive the hardships. Europe made acquaintance with the breed in 1937. It was known as the Congo Dog and attracted much attention. The breed appeared in the United States that same year and grew very popular. Basenjis were filmed in a few movies, which contributed to their popularity.
