Basenjis - Lure Coursing
The AKC recognized Basenjis as a separate breed in 1943. Since that time on, the Basenji can take part in AKC sanctioned events. Lure coursing is probably one of the most favorite activities of the breed. It tests the dogs' ability to spot and chase down the prey by sight. Unlike scent hounds, Basenjis rely basically on sight, not smell, when chasing the prey. It is true that they still make use of their sense of smell, yet their perfect sight is the main means.
Though the main function of the Basenji is lure coursing, the breed is a good gun dog. In fact, it is the original function of the Basenji. The dogs are trained to locate small game and round it up in order to keep it trapped for the hunter to get it. As a matter of fact, Basenjis are very agile and intelligent dogs that enjoy vigorous activities. They should be trained from an early age to acquire obedience skills.
Members of the BCOA (Basenji Club of America), the National breed club, can obtain necessary information on the main training techniques and the calendar of events to take part in. Besides, the BCOA and affiliate clubs educate breeders and owners on health issues of the breed. They are a great help to novice and experienced owners.
Basenjis - Rescue Work
Breed education helps to reduce the number of abandoned Basenjis that end up in rescues yearly. Dog fanciers are welcomed to foster rescue Basenjis or donate to rescue organizations to cover their expenses. Rescues consist mainly of volunteers. Thanks to their efforts, many breeders and owners are informed on the issue of responsible breeding and ownership, which is instrumental in decreasing the number of diseased Basenjis.
