Basenjis - Make Your Choice
Prospective owners of Basenjis are advised to purchase dogs from responsible breeders who have proved themselves in the course of time. Many Basenji breeders prefer to register their dogs with the Basenji Club of America or any other affiliate club. The Basenji Club of America encourages responsible breeding and has breeding sound dogs as one of their objectives. Therefore, affiliated breeders are sure to follow the BCOA's code of ethics and aim at quality when breeding their dogs.
It is acknowledged that Basenji dogs can suffer from such inherited diseases as progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, and others. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to test the breeding stock for these disorders. Responsible breeders are also aware of other health issues that are now under consideration. Fanconi syndrome and hemolytic anemia are just few of them.
Fanconi syndrome is a kidney disorder characterized by excessive drinking and urination. If not diagnosed in due time, Fanconi syndrome can be lethal for Basenjis. Breeders and owners of the Basenji dog are advised to test their dogs' urine for glucose starting at the age of three months.
The signs of hemolytic anemia are rather common. Very often, affected dogs have white gums and appear to be inactive. Most Basenjis with hemolytic anemia will not live longer than 2-4 years old. To ensure Basenjis are not a carrier of this disorder, buy from a reputable breeder.
