Basenji Breeder

Usually, a responsible Basenji Breeder is very picky about his/her potential clients, and they never sell their dogs randomly or without getting to know as much as possible about the buyer’s home, family, intentions, dog owning experience, if any, and his or her general attitude toward dogs. What every responsible breeder is after is not getting a puppy off his or her hands as soon as possible, but its happy and healthy life in a new home.

It takes a long time for a would-be Basenji owner to gain trust of a conscientious Basenji Breeder. Owning a dog is a matter of true devotion and great responsibility, so good breeders do not sell their dogs to those who do not live up to at least one of the “good-owner” criterions. Just like a buyer wants to know as much as possible about something he is going to invest his or her money in, a responsible Basenji Breeder wants to make sure this is a responsible and trustworthy dog owner.

Basenji Dogs are great family companions, but there are a number of things for a good Basenji Breeder to warn future dog owners of. Basenji Dogs do not like it when someone teases them, so they are not recommended for families with young children. They can be very suspicious of strangers, but somehow they can differentiate between people on sight. While they are relatively tolerant of one person, they can be unexpectedly short with another, for no visible reason. They should not be trusted with smaller pets, and may express dislike toward other dogs. However, Basenjis are usually good with other Basenjis, but same-sex dominance is still possible.

Basenjis are small dogs, measuring 16-17 inches high at the withers. They have a smooth and shiny coat that comes in black-and-tan, black-and-brindle, and red. These dogs have white on the chest, stomach, legs and tail tip. Sometimes, they have a white facial blaze. The furrowed forehead gives them a characteristic worried look. The eyes are small and oval, and the ears are sharpened and upright. The tail is curved over the back. The coat is short, and it does not shed much. Basenji Breeders usually recommend these dogs for those who do not like to spend a long time grooming their pets.

Basenjis rarely suffer from genetic diseases, but some species have Fanconi’s syndrome, a serious kidney problem, which requires immediate assistance. These dogs can be susceptible to eye problems, gastrointestinal disorders, parasite infestations and contagious diseases. The latter is easier to prevent than to treat. A reputable Basenji Breeder is well aware of diseases that affect this particular breed, and he/she does not refuse to take back a puppy should a disease surface some day.
