Basenjis are ancient dogs known as the barkless. This breed from the AKC Hound Group originated in Africa. Nowadays, Basenjis are used as companions and take part in lure coursing and other canine sports. The Basenji is small and elegant. It has a good sense of smell and perfect sight. The dog never barks, yet it is not mute.
Basenjis - Description
Adult Basenjis stand about 17 inches at the shoulder. Females are usually smaller than males. The average weight is 23 pounds. Heavy-boned Basenjis are undesirable. The Basenji has dark almond-shaped eyes with dark rims. The ears are small and erect. The muzzle is relatively short.
Basenjis have a short coat of fine texture. The most common colors are chestnut red, black, brindle, and tricolor. Too much white is undesirable in dogs with white markings. The breed is easy to care for in terms of grooming. It is very clean and likes to care for its coat. Due to their habits, Basenjis are often compared to cats. The Basenji sheds a little. Shedding can be managed by the means of regular brushing. Basenjis - Living Conditions
Since Basenjis are Hounds dogs, they have considerable exercise needs. The dogs are fairly active indoors and need something to be busy with. Though Basenjis are best with a fenced yard, an apartment will do on the condition they are exercised daily. The breed is very sociable and friendly. It does well with other pets and will surely enjoy companionship of other dogs. If you have other dogs in the household, Basenjis will quickly make friends with them. Basenjis - Peculiarities
Once you have studied the needs of the breed, it is important to learn more about their personality traits. Overall, Basenjis are wonderful companions for energetic people and those who do not want to burden themselves with excessive grooming. The dog is also good for people with allergies.
Basenjis are very curious and playful. Breed owners state that the Basenji has mysterious eyes. Indeed, its intent look is a characteristic feature of the breed. As a legend states, the ancestors of the Basenji could talk once. They were very devoted to their owners and were willing to please them all they could. Legend states that once a Basenji learnt his owner's secret. The dog made up its mind to keep silent forever in order not to clue. From that time on all Basenjis were barkless.
